Our Philosophy

In 1896 the foundations of Basedow were laid. The Basedow family (led by Johannes Christoff Basedow) shared a great interest in the developing wine trade of the late 19th century. It seemed obvious then, for Johannes to indulge his passion, and so he built the Basedow winery.

Friedrich Basedow, Johannes older brother, was in fact a founder of the Roseworthy Agricultural College, a leading institution for winemakers worldwide. For over 110 years Basedow have consistently produced some of the finest wines from the Barossa. Today it is the second oldest family owned winery in the region. Steeped in tradition, Basedow wines continue to produce quality Barossa Valley wines whilst enjoying local and international success.

Our winemaking philosophy dictates that the best of old world tradition is blended with new world innovation to produce wines that highlight fruit character and regionality. So with great respect to the past, the current range of Basedow wines reflect the modern Australian lifestyle and expectations of our customers.

Today, Basedow continues the traditional Barossa Valley styles of lightly wooded Semillon and robust, flavoursome Shiraz. With a nod to the present, the range includes exciting new varieties such as Pinot Gris as a popular inclusion. Our wines are produced for consumption in good company, with laughter and spontaneity.

Choose Basedow wines for their heritage and enjoy them for their character.
